Description

Ziffer was one of the artists in love with his adoptive city, and he painted its various lanes and views throughout the period he lived in Baia Mare. The first period, 1905-1910, and later on after 1930, are the moments that best capture the artist's passion for such views of the city. While in 1908 he painted the famous "Central Square in Baia Mare" or the banks of Săsar River, after 1930 his landscapes seem to head to urban areas that are more difficult to recognise. Although the bank of Săsar River or the Mill of the city remain his main pictorial targets, Ziffer works with lesser known corner, using the same palette with raw colours. With artists such as Ziffer, Baia Mare easily enters a special category of cities put on canvas, giving iconic urban images to the history of art. Flowers Hill, Cross Hill, the Reformed Church, Săsar River or the Mint are just some of the places captured by entire generations of artists including Ferenczy Karoly, István Tóth, Tibor Boromizsa, András Mikola, Janos Krizsan or Géza Kádár. This landscape, typical of the last period of creation in Baia Mare, presents a calmer Ziffer who depicts nature with a technique he made famous in the 20s - a constructive composition with clear geometric elements, a clear drawing, important in the final effect, and an efficient chromatic palette, with bright, raw, sometimes virulent shades, reminding once again of the Fauves's creation that influenced Ziffer in the early 20th century.
