Description

On the gold background of the icon, Saint Anne is depicted down to below her waist, holding the Virgin Mary, child. Saint Anne is draped in a large violet-red maphorion, which covers her head, then falls in angular folds over her shoulders and arms. In her left arm, she holds Mary as a child, who is also dressed in a long blue dress and a rotten cherry-colored maphorion that covers her head and arms and falls to her back. The drapery of the clothes is made with darker or lighter shades, highlighting the lighter or darker parts. The characters' faces are elongated, even graceful, with large eyes, fish-scale shaped, beautifully contoured, arched eyebrows, long nose, small and red mouth. They are painted in darker shades and the lit parts are highlighted by parallel white gleams. To this particularity is added a certain disproportion between head and body, stylistic elements that place the icon's painting at the beginning of the 17th century. The icon has undergone repeated "washings" and partial repaints visible in the area of the clothes, without affecting the painting of the faces. (A.D.)
