Battle of the Amazons (after Peter Paul Rubens)
Battle of the Amazons (after Peter Paul Rubens)
Description
The mythological theme of the Amazons will become a subject mentioned in Homer’s "Iliad" or the myth from Argonautica or Virgil’s "Aeneid." Herodotus will locate them in Pontus, on the southern coast of the Black Sea, before they migrate to Scythia. Portrayed as fearless, trained in a warrior spirit, they exemplify tenacity and strength. The work presents us with the battle between Theseus’s Athenians and the Amazon women on the bridge of Troy. Rubens creates a swirling composition, a masterpiece in Baroque style, with a perspective that offers depth and dynamism to the scene. The artistic narration is anchored around the bridge, which forms a center that encircles the flow of movement of the combatants. (A.A.)
