Gabriel Bathory, prince of Transylvania between 1608 and 1613, was a controversial but significant figure for understanding a period of political instability and social unrest in the principality's history. Originating from a branch of the influential Bathory family, he ascended to the throne in a tense context, marked by internal struggles for power, external pressures from the Habsburg Empire and the Ottoman Porte, as well as local noble rivalries. The importance of Gabriel Bathory in the history of Transylvania lies in several directions. Firstly, his reign reflects the fragility of the principality's political institutions at the beginning of the seventeenth century. Although initially supported by a part of the Hungarian nobility, his authoritarian style and unpredictable policies quickly attracted adversaries, both among the local elite and outside the borders. The conflict with the Saxon towns, especially with Sibiu, speaks to his contentious manner of rule, which strained interethnic and social relations in the principality. On the external front, Gabriel Bathory tried to maneuver between the divergent interests of the neighboring great powers, aiming to strengthen Transylvania's autonomy. However, the lack of coherence in his foreign policy and the unstable alliances, including the failed attempts to secure the crown of Moldova, contributed to his political isolation and, ultimately, his fall. His reign is often viewed as a period of decline in the principality's prestige, but at the same time it highlights the complexity of the power games in the region and the fragility of the balance between local principalities and the great empires. Also, he was the last prince from the Bathory family who ruled Transylvania, thus marking the end of an era dominated by this influential dynasty.
