A similar lot was sold for $15000 at "Stack's Bowers Galleries (& Ponterio)" auction house, California, USA, August 10, 2016. 2 Lei 1870 the second Romanian gold coin minted by the modern Romanian state. The first (also a 20 lei, minted in 1868) was intended only for protocol and international recognition. This second gold piece, however, was intended for circulation. Only 5,000 coins came out of the mint in Bucharest, which was inaugurated in 1870 (in the Schäffer - Stambuliu catalogue of 2009 it is stated that the 1870 gold coins were minted in Berlin and the effigy of Carol I was engraved by Kullrich). The small mintage makes this gold coin one of the greatest rarities in Romanian numismatics.
