Gheorghe Popescu participated alongside the Romanian national football team in three World Cup finals (1990, 1994 and 1998) and two European Football Championships (1996 and 2000). Throughout his career, he played for CS Universitatea Craiova, Dinamo Bucharest, Steaua Bucharest, PSV Eindhoven, Tottenham Hotspur, FC Barcelona, U.S. Lecce, Galatasaray S.K. (with which he won the UEFA Cup in 2000) and SV Hannover 96, winning 13 trophies. Alongside PSV Eindhoven he won the Eredivisie (1990-91, respectively 1991-1992) and the Dutch Super Cup (1991-1992). The evolution of Romanian players like Gheorghe Popescu and Gheorghe Hagi in top-tier teams such as FC Barcelona, Real Madrid or PSV Eindhoven in the early '90s represents a turning point in Romanian football.
