The French cartographer Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667) published for the first time in 1658 in Paris the work 'Cartes générales de toutes les parties du monde' which was a great success among his contemporaries. Sanson was geographer to the royal court, which allowed him to benefit from the financial support of kings Louis XIII and Louis XIV. After his death, his drawings were published in several editions by his two descendants and the publisher Hubert Jaillot. The present copy contains 28 maps from this work, probably printed around 1683 on copper plates. The lot is completed by 18 plates from the work 'Caracteres des passions', published in Paris, with drawings by Charles Le brun (1619-1690), edited by Jacques Chéreau. The third piece, 'New Drawing Principles and Different Characteristics of Passions', is a republication of the work already mentioned, with 9 engravings. The three pieces are bound in calfskin-covered cardboard covers. All pieces features damages due to time.
