The scene seems to represent Diana, the goddess of hunting, accompanied by her nymphs. The character in the lower right corner is most likely Acteon, the hunter who catches them while bathing – the dog in the upper left supporting this interpretation. The composition is reminiscent of the work of Sir Peter Lely: the position of Acteon and Diana is almost identical, but partly or entirely mirrored, and the composition of the landscape has similar structures. These parallels suggest that the author might have been inspired by Lely's painting, but offering his own interpretation.
