Geta Brătescu is the first artist to whom a personal exhibition was dedicated in the Romanian pavilion at the Venice Biennale, in 2017. A devotee of the avant-garde, Geta Brătescu approaches the art multidisciplinary and expresses herself through painting, graphics, collage, assembly, or performance. The artist has a double specialization, in art and letters, and studies simultaneously with George Călinescu, Tudor Vianu, and Camil Ressu. The artist will constantly oscillate between the surface of the canvas and that of the paper, leaving behind her a significant written work. The latter will divide between journals, research and prose, aiming at both her thoughts about art, and thoughts and impressions that the artist records on trips. Adopting an eclectic approach, Geta Brătescu will choose as her primal subjects the brush, scissors, and paper. Regardless of the final result, her entire work boils down to drawing, to geometry, and to the dance of forms. Even in painting, the artist cuts out the composition, works fragmented, divides the elements and then combines them in an unexpected sequence, practically creating a kind of plastic collage. We can talk about a choreography executed from the wrist, driven by the dexterity of the hand and finished by the brush stroke at the tip of the fingers. In the economy of her creation, art is perceived as a game, or art can't be anything else for the artist than an infinite space dedicated to the experiment and uninterrupted exercise. The studio thus becomes a sacred space, whether we're talking about the physical space itself or about a temple of the mind where the artist unfolds her imaginative exercises. Geta Brătescu will continuously develop her technical procedures and will often return to self-representation. She finds her sources of inspiration in ancient art or in texts or characters like Medea, Aesop, Faust or Mutter Courage. She works in an intimate, personal register, in which she assimilates and approaches her characters who inspire her. Throughout her entire career, the artist operates with both text and image; and the form of literary expression will sometimes replace the image.
