Simon Hollósy (Simion Corbul) was born in 1857 in Sighetu Marmației, in a family of small Armenian-Moldavian merchants. His first contact with drawing was enabled by his professor Franz Griesmayer, at his studies at the Piarist High School in Sighet. Then he studied on and off at the Commercial Academy in Budapest, without obtaining a degree. It was in the Hungarian metropolis that he had the first attempt to study art academically, at the School of Life Drawing, where he enrolled as a member of the audience and where he went sporadically for a semester in the academic year 1875-1876, at the classes of Ferencz Klimovits and Bertalan Székely. His true education was acquired in Munich, however, where he studied at the Fine Arts Academy for 4 years, between 1878 and 1882, unaware that Munich would become his second home. In 1886 Hollósy founded one of the most significant private schools in Munich, which, in its 32 years of existence, was attended by about 2000 students, attracted only by the halo of Hollósy the pedagogue. The most important action of the artist at the end of the 19th century was creating a true artistic movement - the Baia Mare Colony. Realist painting, with naturalistic tones, practiced and preached by Hollósy, was the new orientation starting with 1896; the plein air painting he had established became the future of the artistic colony. Although he parted rather quickly with the environment created by himself, Hollósy is recognised today as an innovator, a creator and the spiritual parent of the Baia Mare Colony. The artistic creation of Hollósy illustrates his long process of appropriating the technical and formal means capable of transposing the complex intellectual and emotional traits of his personality into an authentic artistic discourse, a deeply individualised one. The testimonials of this process mark each of the major steps of Hollósy's creation.
