Research information

PROVENANCE

Collection of Boyan Radev until ca. 2018; from ca. 2018 private collection

Bencho Obreshkov is an artist with an exceptionally rich work, in which we can find genre diversity, as well as skillful handling of different styles. In the 1930s, Obreshkov emphasized the genre of landscape, still life and portrait. In the early 1940s, the artist's interests were focused on still life, which is also a distinctive theme in Obreshkov's work. In the period after 1945, when the artist left for Romania together with his colleagues Zlatyu Boyadzhiev, David Perets, Boris Angelushev and others, his interests were mainly focused on the genre of landscape and rural-worker themes. The views from the various Romanian cities and villages that Obreshkov painted are in a specific color - he uses darker tones than the "bright and sonorous palette" known to the author until then. The work "Girl with a Dove" dated 1951 is intriguing both in its plastic construction, determined by the creative interests of Bencho Obreshkov of the period, and as a plot. In the oil work we find the author's distinctive still life in an interior, but also a figure of a girl, which is stylistically characteristic of Obreshkov's manner after the 1950s - without distinctive features in the girl's physiognomy, with clothing typical of the period, as well as with the specific black outline surrounding the figure.
