For nearly his entire artistic career, Dimo Nikolov lived and worked in the Czech Republic. He completed his studies at the Prague Academy in 1927 under Prof. Vlaho Bukovac and Prof. Jakub Obrovský. While strongly influenced by the Czech aesthetics of the period, Nikolov frequently traveled to Bulgaria, where he drew inspiration that helped shape his distinctive and characteristic style. His work reflects a refined synthesis of Bulgarian life and culture with the techniques and sensibilities he mastered in Prague. During the 1930s, Nikolov’s artistic interests centered on Bulgarian subjects. He worked actively in portraiture, often depicting the inhabitants of smaller towns and capturing the physiognomies of ordinary people in their natural surroundings. The painting Three Graces exemplifies the essential qualities of Nikolov’s work from this decade: careful attention to detail in portraiture and physiognomy, the rendering of each figure’s clothing, the landscape backdrop, and his distinctive palette of golden ochre, varied browns, and vivid red accents.
