On the Friday of the Life-Giving Fountain in 1940, Arsenie Boca, named Zian Boca, is ordained a monk. In 1942 he was elevated to the priestly rank and appointed abbot of the Brâncoveanu Monastery. Already since 1940 he started at the Monastery from Sâmbăta de Sus what was called "the movement of spiritual revival from Sâmbăta", about which Nichifor Crainic commented: "What an uplifting weather when the all of Avram Iancu's country moves in pilgrimage, singing with the snow chest-high, towards Sâmbăta de Sus, the foundation of the martyred voivode Constantin Brâncoveanu! ". He becomes famous as a great confessor, and Father Cleopa would try to contact him through letters, which were intercepted and confiscated by the Securitate. In the winter of 1944, Professor Nichifor Crainic checked, while at Sâmbăta de Sus, the abbot Arsenie Boca and Serafim Popescu's translation of the Philokalia. After the occupation of the country by the Soviet army, the hieromonk Arsenie was arrested for the first time in Râmnicu Vâlcea on July 17, 1945, on charges of active participation in the Legionary Movement. He was released on July 30, 1945, under pressure from the church. He was arrested again on May 14, 1948, for his help to the anti-communist fighters, former legionaries trained and parachuted by the Americans in the Făgăraș Mountains. Being one of the martyrs of the communist prisons, he was transferred from one gulag to another, including the Canal. His tomb is today one of the most significant places of pilgrimage in Romania, visited daily by hundreds of pilgrims.
