Research information

Petru from Topârcea (also known as Petru Zugrav Topârcea, Petru Zugrav Popovici, Petru Zugrav) was a muralist and icon painter active in the last quarter of the 18th century. A native of the locality of Topârcea (today part of the city of Ocna Sibiului, Sibiu county), he carried out his work in localities in the center and south of Transylvania. His style, of popular invoice, fits into the post-Brâncovenesc tradition of the region, with obvious influences from the mural art of southern Transylvania. Considering the proximity of Sibiu, it is plausible that his artistic training took place in one of the artisan centers active in this area. His icons stand out due to their meticulous execution, of fine miniaturist inspiration, in which decoration plays a central role. Although not noted for exacting draughtsmanship, his works impress with their warm and harmonious color palette, the balanced composition and the richness of ornamental details.
