Geographer, cartographer and editor Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571-1638) published at Amsterdam in 1635 the work "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" to which this piece belongs, one of the most important cartographic works in Europe of that time. The copy is a copper engraving, sepia, with the frontispiece coloured by hand after it was printed.
