"From Godâs mercy, I, Matei Basarab, Voivode and Lord, hereby rule that the holy and godly monastery named TitirÄciul having Saint John the Golden-Mouthed as its titular saint and the father abbot Varlaam may be exempted of the wine tax and sheep, pig, or cow tax, and also of all foods occurring over the year in the country under my reign, because I exempted it since it was exempted by all the rulers before, for it is an old monastery, and I did not put the monasteries in the wave of the country, as they were not sold, as in other places, for tithes and wine taxes, whether large or small monasteries, they should be in peace. For this reason, I exempted the holy monastery TitirÄciul, so that it may enjoy peace, as they were exempted in the days of other old rulers; in the same way, you tithers, and wine tax collectors and all of you serving my reign on any position, are to leave it in peace as written above, for those who approach them again will be rebuked more harshly than me. Written in Bucharest, on the 26th day of November, in the year 7141 (1632)".
