Corneliu Baba was always fascinated to obsession with portraits, physiognomy, expression and the manifestation of inner emotions on the human face. The portraits he painted are not just an important component in Baba's work but also a manifestation of his spiritual complexity and the artist's contemplation of the human condition. In the artist's work, the portrait goes through important moments such as: a portrait with a precise identity, which includes faces of important personalities of that time, and the anonymous portrait, which generalises its field of reference, notably depicting human types and ages. Anonymous portraits are done in a much freer manner compared to those of personalities, the touches are more spontaneous, and the interest in props or drapes diminishes. This type of unidentified portrait distances itself from the idea of a particular character and attempts to personify certain elements of social and moral life in a generic human face. The character of the work depicts rather an age and a human type, the model being absorbed in the idea of a generic portrait.
