Pursuing his studies at the "Nicolae Tonitza" Plastic Arts High School would anticipate painter, graphic artist and sculptor Sorin Dumitrescu's professional career. At the Bucharest Fine Arts Institute he was Corneliu Baba's student, as well as the colleague of some important names in Romanian contemporary art, such as Ștefan Câlția or Sorin Ilfoveanu. Sorin Dumitrescu makes his debut in 1969 within a collective exhibition organised in Brașov. In 1981 he establishes, alongside other artists, the "9 + 1" group, as a reaction to the communist regime and the way it related to the national artistic values. True creativity, as the Maestro's stated, lies above the cognitive capacities of the human being. A recurring motif in his work - faith - embraces various forms: churches, representations of biblical figures or abstracted embeddings of archetypal motifs. Whether we look at drawings of completed paintings, whether we have sketches or studies ahead of us, we identify the sacred as the artist's main source of inspiration. Sorin Dumitrescu chooses his elements with great precision and thinks thoroughly of their positioning within the composition. The symbolic weight of his subjects is amplified by the chromatic choice, as well as by the incisive line of drawing. The artist also offers particular importance to the analyses of the distances between idea and thought, which he skilfully transposes into his canvases.
