Having thoroughly studied medicine and philosophy, Ion Mirea would remain, for a very long time, a self-taught painter. He makes his debut with a personal exhibition in Bucharest, in 1938. He continues to exhibit constantly, both within national and international galleries. He also receives various awards by the International Painting and Sculpture Salons in France, and, in 1947, he is awarded a scholarship in Paris. He would only be able to take advantage of this scholarship in 1965, when he would settle indefinitely in France. The artist's colour gift is being revealed to us at its strongest within landscapes, in the penetrating blue skies. Mirea's entire nature becomes flamboyant through the artist's chromatic choices. His trees, abstracted both through shape and through colour, are definitely distancing themselves from the conventional key of Academic art, acquiring a new encoding. The artist suggests the convention and fixes it within easily interpretable symbols. Taking advantage of his poet vocation as well, Ion Mirea makes a juxtaposition between his plastic work and non-conventional rhythms, of a blank verse, and hence he rewrites the daily order of plastic language.
