With a prolific artistic activity, including various modes of expression (painting on canvas, installations, stained glass, sculpture, etc.), Horia Damian will occupy a revealing place on the contemporary art scene. He made his debut in 1942 at the Official Salon, where he won the Prize for Engraving, and at the Venice Biennale. 1942 will also be the year of his first solo exhibition, held at the Romanian Athenaeum. He will be appreciated since his debut by personalities such as art collector Krikor H. Zambaccian or painter Jean Alexandru Steriadi. His participation in the Official Salon in 1945 brought Damian the Anastase Simu Prize, a scholarship that allowed him to go to Paris, where he would work with masters André Lhote and Fernand Léger. Master of the fullness and perfection of the compositional elements, of the colours, together with the determination to translate the invisible into image, his creation will abolish the responsibility towards what is perceived, towards form or object. Themes such as the column, the sky, the earth, the throne, the sphinx, the sarcophagus or the pyramid will become perpetual themes over time, suggesting the artist's search for meaning, significance and the creation of an inner world. With an architectural and cosmogonic vision, the artist will approach immemorial times, meanings, appealing to geometric rigours and monumentality, sensing the meanings of a real infinity. (G.M.)
