oil on canvas, 38 x 33 cm, Signed and dated upper right, in black, "Ilfoveanu, (19)83"; signed, dated and titled on the back, in blue, ”Ilfoveanu, (19)83, Musician with Lute”

A masterful constructor of forms, Sorin Ilfoveanu has created, over time, a cyclic work in which we distinguish landscapes, portraits or compositions with symbol-characters. The form is the means by which the artist coordinates and articulates the visual; and repetition is used to highlight symbols. The artist becomes a consummate master of form construction and proposes several variations of the human-nature, human-animal relationship. The fascinating encounters of straight or curved lines, faint or incisive, composing the emotional narrative of his work, culminate in a plethora of character-signs. The artist will look for reasons and symbols in his own imaginary to transpose onto the canvas. He will no longer be guided by real space and time, but will tend to express a permanence of feelings. In Sorin Ilfoveanu's work, the drawing becomes painterly and the painting seems drawn. This time, the artist focuses on the male character, a recurring presence in his work, with long garments that cover his entire body. The distinct grimace, which merges with the neutrality of the background, discreetly harmonizes with the musical instrument that the protagonist carries in his arms. The lute becomes a secondary character, accompanying the somber song that dominates the entire canvas.
