The Becker family comes from Germany. Emil's great-grandfather, a famous engraver, was requested by Tsar Peter the Great to create a series of jewellery for him. August Becker, Emil's father, a renowned engraver, came to Romania in 1875, called by King Carol I to restore the lead ornaments of the Curtea de Argeș Monastery. Emil Wilhelm August von Becker continued the tradition and became a sculptor of the Royal House. He was a student of the master Ion Georgescu (father of modern Romanian sculpture), then studied at the Royal Institute of Arts in Munich. His greatest achievement was the "Tomb of the Unknown Soldier" in Bucharest, dedicated to those fallen in World War I and located in Carol I Park (1923). He also manufactured numerous medals and plates. This medal was issued shortly after the death of Queen Marie.
