Modern in all his art forms, Victor Brauner became, starting in the 20s, one of the notable representatives of Romanian Avant-garde. Even as early as his years of study at the Bucharest School of Fine Arts, as well as in the time spent within Horia Igiroșanu's Free Academy of Art, the artist revealed novel artistic qualities, preponderantly turning to modern European painting. One of his interests in the following years were the futuristic approach of Cubism, his surrealist pursuit being encouraged by auspicious environments, such as the magazine "Unu", with which the artist collaborated, along with Ilarie Voronca, Stephan Roll or Max Herman Maxy. He was a close friend of Stephan Roll, an avant-garde poet and prose writer, and the two carried out their work in the same avant-garde environments of their age ("75 HP", "Punct", "Integral", "Unu"). He contributed as an illustrator in two of his volumes, "Poeme în aer liber" ("Poems in the Open Air", 1929) and "Moartea vie a Eleonorei" ("Eleonora’s Living Death", 1930), edited by Stephan Roll within the Integral Collection and Unu Publishing House.
