Lucian Grigorescu's works are often captured en plein-air and faithfully render the outside environment, focusing, admittedly, more on the moment and the atmosphere than on form or line. From the warmth of the studio, interiors or still lifes, the painter evolves towards the outside space, towards the overflowing nature and city landscapes, or towards the endless array of stone buildings with colored roofs. This time, we find a scene from Balchik, a settlement that served as his protective muse especially during the summer stays along the Silver Coast. In her album dedicated to Balchik, Balchica Moșescu-Măciucă fondly recalls Lucian Grigorescu's visits to her parental home: "When dad announced: 'Lucica is coming to us', for me all play would stop, I wouldn't leave the house and I would start to wait because I knew I would attend a different performance each time." From her we also learn that Octavian Moșescu had "a real weakness" for the artist, and that he placed him on an imaginary pedestal alongside the most resonant names of Romanian art.
