15. Two chromolithographs "Elena and Alexandru Ioan Cuza", by Alexandru Resmeriță, 1909, made on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Union of the Romanian Principalities

The ruler is represented in a standing position, half profile to the left, frontal look; wears a black uniform; his right hand with the fist clenched on a book that lies on a table, on the left; near the book is the feathered bicorne, a background with panels decorated with baguettes and stuccoes, as well as a curtain, on the right. The portrait has a rim-like frame with four medallions on every corner, each bearing an inscription: top left: V. Alecsandri: top right: M. Cogălniceanu; lower left: Bishop Melchisedek; lower right: Constantin Negri. Top middle: a pigeon in the blue sky. The lithography reproduces one of the ruler's photograph made by Carol Szathmari, which served as a model for the official portrait litho-printed in 1851. Litho-printed inscriptions under the frame, on the left: The rights reserved T. Severin 1909; on the right: Al. Teacher-painter Resmeriță: middle: While Cuza was elected in Iasi, the crowd waiting for the result remembered that a pigeon kept on flying around and sitting on the frontispiece of the Administrative Palace. (v. Istoria). Litho-printed inscription in a cartouche, under the portrait: ALECSANDRU IOAN CUZA / 1859-1866 / By his election as Ruler, on January 5th and 24th 1859, the Union was made [...]. The Lady is represented standing, half profile to the right, frontal look; her left hand on a closed book, resting on a table with sculpted legs; backwards, on the left, a detail of the oval back rest of a settle and a curtain. The portrait has a rim-like frame, with four oval medallions on every corner, two of them bearing the inscription: The Elena Doamna asylum; and two: the Ruginoasa Castle. Top middle: a white dove flying in the blue sky. The model for the chromolithography was the lithography or one of the photographs taken by Carol Szathmari for the official portfolio of the Lady, in 1851.
