The Alsatian Lorenz Fries (c. 1490-1531) distinguished himself as an encyclopedic spirit, passionate about the study of medicine, astronomy, geography, and cosmography. After a long period dedicated to studies in Italy and France, he settled in Strasbourg where he began to work on the editing of Ptolemy's Geography. The piece represents map IX from the series dedicated to Europe, which was part of the edition printed in 1535 by his son Christoph in Lyon.
