Institutul Geografic Militar era inaugurat de regele Carol I în 1895. În anul următor comandant al instituției militare era numit generalul Constantin I. Brătianu. În 1910 Institutul era transformat în Serviciul Geografic al Armatei, pentru ca, după Primul Război Mondial, să-și recapete vechea denumire.
