acuarelă pe hârtie, 53.5 x 73.5 cm, signed bottom left, in pencil, "Iulia Hălăucescu"

From an early age, the artist was encouraged to study watercolour under the guidance of teacher Lupu-Chelsoi, the sister of well-known watercolourist Maria Chelsoi-Cristea. She graduated in 1948 and, after consistently working in oil and watercolour, participated with graphics and paintings at the interregional exhibition in Iasi, where she was noticed by Corneliu Baba. On his encouragement, she enrolled at the Fine Arts Academy in Iasi, in the class of professor Călin Alupi. After the dissolution of the Academy in Iasi, she continued her studies at the Nicolae Grigorescu Institute of Fine Arts in Bucharest with Samuel Mutzner and Ion Marșic. Along with her friend, Simona Vasiliu Chintilă, she goes to the landscape and refines her watercolour technique, being recognized as a lady of Romanian watercolour. Although she oscillated a lot between oil and watercolour, the artist chose the latter as a means of expression for her cycles - Waters and mountains, Legends from the Bistrita valley, Evocations at the quatrains of Omar Khayyam, Floral Structures, The Epic of Bicaz. Equipped with the ability to capture the instantaneous, watercolour, disregarded at the end of the 19th century as minor art, sublimates in Iulia Hălăucescu's creation the monumentality and poetry with which she leans towards the world. Precisely the water colours allow her digressions on several themes - landscape, portrait, still life - captured photographically and passed through the filter of a reflective personality.
