Coined by Radu I of Wallachia (1377 - 1383), brother of the famous Vladislav (Vlaicu) (1363 - 1377) and father of the glorious Mircea the Elder. This monarch is the first one to have earned, for himself and his descendants, the Great Voivode title (appearing on coins as well). As a typology, this Wallachian coin is known in Romanian Numismatics under the name of Ban. The Wallachian Ban was equal to half a Dinar and corresponded to an Obol from the monetary system of the neighbouring Hungarian Kingdom. The item is unusual because the common Dinars coined by the Slavonian rulers were silver pieces, and the pieces coined following their model should have been also made of silver, but this one is made of an inferior alloy called billon.
