The monetary emissions assigned to the reign of Stephen the Great are named Groschen and Half Groschen, in the same system as the Ottoman Akçe, a monetary system which continues Peter Aaron's (1455 - 1457) monetary reform. The coins are divided in two types (I and II), and made of highest quality silver. On the obverse side, we find the caption "MONETAMOLDAVIE", between an interior pearled circle and an exterior pearled circled, represented by the Moldavian coat of arms, the Moldavian Bull's Head captured frontally, symbolising strength, alongside a five rays star (the sun), placed between the bull's horns, symbolising the enlightenment of the good reign, with the uneven ray directed downwards; on the side the five petals rose (heraldic rose), symbolising faith, as well as the half moon (the moon in its blue moon phase), symbolising rebirth! On the obverse, we find the caption "STEFANVSVOIEVODA" between an interior pearled circle and an exterior one, and a double-crossed shield with anchored ends.
