The obverse of the medal shows the bust of the poet and man of culture Vasile Alecsandri, facing right, with the signature of the engraver Fany Șaraga below it and surrounded by the inscription "To Vasile Alecsandri 1821 + 1890 Grateful Country", while the reverse includes the phrase "Statue erected / in / Iasi year 1905 / in the days of H.M. king / Carol I / as prime minister / G. Gr. Cantacuzino / Minister of Education / M. Vlădescu / mayor Gh. Lascar". Vasile Alecsandri, a prominent personality of Moldavia and then of 19th century Romania, was, apart from his career dedicated to letters, and minister, diplomat and founding member of the Romanian Academy.
