Orientalismul pe care Theodor Aman și-l apropie în pictura sa ne descrie atât gustul epocii - societatea artistică pariziană cu care intra în contact era îndrăgostită de farmecul oriental, cât și un filon autohton, urmare a secolelor de influență otomană. Astfel, costumele, obiceiurile, clădiri, străzi, piețe cu specific oriental clădeau un adevărat orient hibrid, dar local, pe care Aman îl recunoaște și îl înglobează în creația sa.
