oil on cardboard, 50 x 62 cm, signed lower left, in black, "C. Ressu"

Related in vision to the robustness of the human forms specific to Michelangelo and the Renaissance in general, as well as the voluptuous Rubensian carnality, Ressu applies to his nudes a beauty closer to nature, almost heroic. Thus, Ressu's women are devoid of divine grace, as this was conceived in Roman mythology; their charm finds its full expression in the consciousness of each character, its natural and primordial sensuality, thereby contrasting an older vision of the ideal of noble beauty. The painter's classical training facilitated his approach to the subject under discussion, but not in such a way deeply rooted in academic considerations. The drawing and the quality of the stroke were to free Ressu from figurative constraints, the emphasis being more on chromatic valences. Didactically crafted, modeled after, carrying a series of preparatory sketches, Ressu's nude gains vitality precisely through the vibrant and strong palette reminiscent of the passion for the raw tones of the Fauvists.
