83. Engraving "The Alliance between Gheorghe Rakoczi II, Prince of Transylvania and King of Sweden Carl X Gustaf", 1697

The alliance between Prince of Transylvania Gheorghe Rakoczi II and King of Sweden Carl X Gustaf was made against Polish King John II Casimir in 1657, in a context in which the Transylvanian Prince aimed at the Polish throne. The item marks the moment when the two allies were preparing to take part in the decisive battle which they were bound to lose. This work represents the image of this political and military alliance, featuring the two Princes and their armies in close-up. It was executed in 1697 by French engraver Pierre Lepautre (1652-1716), upon request by Swedish military engineer Erik Dahlberg (1625-1703), a passionate researcher of Sweden's military history.
