The second French Republic had a very brief existence, between the 1848 Revolution and the coup d'état caused by elected President Louis Napoleon on the 2nd of December 1851, by which the Republic was suppressed and the Second Empire was founded, and after which he adopted the title of Emperor, following the tradition established by his uncle Napoleon I.
