The National Romanian Orthodox Women Society (SONFR) was founded in 1910 by a group of ladies from the Romanian high society, with the purpose of supporting women's cultural and social emancipation. The Society had branches in all of the country's counties, in cities and even in rural establishments, and a Central Committee was in charge of coordinating its activity from Bucharest. During the First World War, SONFR organised a campaign hospital for Romanian wounded and ill army officers, people's canteens, as well as other forms of support for the population. At the end of the conflagration, the active members have received this sign of recognition for their efforts.
