Historical Art Auction, including a sequence from the collection of museographer and artist Giuseppe Sabbarese #660/2026 #660
History is not just an abstract series of chronologies and treaties, but a tangible reality, cast in precious metal or printed on paper. This auction proposes a journey into the evolution of power and memory, inviting collectors to follow a broad itinerary, starting from classical civilization to the political complexity of the 20th century. The opening of this knowledge journey is marked by the issues of Antiquity. Roman denarii, belonging to both the effervescent period of the Republic and the imperial era, are presented not only as instruments of exchange, but as supreme means of visual propaganda through which Rome imposed its authority on the known world. Beyond the Roman borders, this auction captures one of the greatest conflicts of Late Antiquity: the rivalry between the Eastern Roman Empire and Sassanid Persia. This rivalry is observed through the gold coins issued by Theodosius, Anastasius, Justinian the Great and Constans II, on the one hand, and the Sasanian coins of the monarchs Khosrow II and Hormizd IV, on the other. A chronological leap brings us into the space of national history, through a selection of phaleristics. The military orders and medals present in the auction visually reconstruct the destiny of modern Romania. From the medals of the Kingdom of Romania, witnesses of the founding and reforming effort, to the distinctions of the interwar period and, later, to those of the communist regime, these pieces illustrate the evolution, but also the modification of values, ideologies and the way in which the state understood to reward merit, sacrifice or loyalty. This axis of "great history" is doubled by the sequence of historical art, an area that brings us closer to the human dimension of the past. Period documents, collectibles, and books bearing the handwritten signatures of notable figures function as primary sources. They transport us from the grandiose sphere of state authority to that of offices and everyday life. Each lot in this catalog represents a fragment of memory saved from oblivion.
