Obverse legend: +MONETAMOLDAVIE Obverse description: Central ox's head with five-rays star elongated between horns, left-leaning semicircle and five-petals rosette on the right. Reverse legend: +STEPANUSVOIEVODA Reverse description: Central split shield, with a cross with equal, flared, and split at the tips arms in the first quarter, arranged above a rosette, and three fesses in the second quarter. Catalog reference: Romanian Coins and Banknotes (MBR), no. 603. The groschen coins issued by Stephen the Great are relatively rare coins, such emissions are known from a few isolated discoveries located mainly in the Moldovan territory. Compared to the type II groschen, the type I groschen are much rarer issues, which suggests that they were issued in smaller quantities and for a shorter period. The artistic quality is superior, the coin being struck with punches created by experienced engravers, accustomed to the international gothic style, which refines in Moldovan coin art the gothic duct of the legend letters.
