Beginning his creative activity in a climate of freedom, at a time when the Romanian artistic scene was going through a modest "renaissance" (1965-1970), Horia Bernea will develop his creation freely, often taking nature and tradition as premises. With its archetypal construction and picturesque hills, Poiana Mărului was to become the new "Barbizon" of young Romanian painting from 1955 onwards, one of the inaugurators of this space, alongside Teodor Rusu (1935-2005) being Horia Bernea. Other artists who will join the artistic circle will be Letitia Bucur, Șerban Milcovici, Teodor Moraru, Barbu Nițescu, Vasile Ulian, Maria Meșteru, Ion Dumitriu, Șerban Epure etc. Here, the artist Bernea will capture, through photography, drawing, mixed techniques or painting, the hill of Piscul Borî-Bărdaș, a motif that we will meet since 1972 in successive exhibitions - "Deal I" ("First Hill"), Simeza Gallery, Bucharest (1972); "Deal II" ("Second Hill"), Romanian Athenaeum, Bucharest (1974), "Deal III" ("Third Hill"), Richard Demarco Gallery, Edinburgh; Generative Art Gallery, London (1975); "Deal IV", Museum of History of the RCP, Bucharest; Venice Biennial, Venice (1976; 1980); Helios Galleries, Timișoara; Art Museum, Timișoara; Criș County Museum, Oradea (1977) and "Deal V" ("Fourth Hill"), Simeza Gallery, Bucharest; Venice Biennial, Venice; Riverside Studios, London; House Gallery, London (1978; 1980).
