oil on fibreboard, 82 x 114 cm, 82 × 114 cm, signed and dated bottom right, with black, "Magdalena Rădulescu, 1970"

Ranging between surrealist and expressionist visions alike, the artist Magdalena Rădulescu would centre her creative development around tradition, myths and spiritual heritage. She would go on to study art in Munich (1920-1922) under the guidance of landscape painter Max Angerer (1877-1955) and in Paris, at the "La Grande Chaumière" Academy (1932-1934) under the wing of painters René-Xavier Prinet (1861-1946) and Bernard Boutet de Monvel (1881-1949). She made her debut in 1924, at the Official Salon in Bucharest, in tandem with a fruitful exhibition activity carried out in Paris, Rome, Milan and Venice. Using a wide variety of means of expression (cardboard, canvas, tin, glass, terracotta, leather), the motifs of her paintings often revolve around dance, music, fairy tales, traditional customs, peasant and gypsy portraits, picturesque oriental attires, carnivals, cavalcades, fireworks scenes, rainmaker performances, or circus performances.
