Ion Bițan finishes his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest, as a student of Alexandru Steriadi. In 1964, he represents Romania at the Venice Biennale, alongside other Romanian artists. This travelling abroad would open up new horizons for Bițan. He discovers modern techniques such as collage or assemblage. He begins to organise international exhibitions, and in the summers of 1970 and 1971, he would go on to create his works during artistic residencies in the Netherlands. He is awarded the critic's prize by the Visual Artists’ Union of Romania. The earthquake of 1977 leads to the loss (and theft) of many of his works. In 1981 he exhibits his works at MOMA, while in 1986 he will again go on to represent Romania at the Venice Biennale. In 1990, Ion Bițan designed the trophy for the UNITER award, a prize which, starting from 1991, begins to be awarded annually for the most important theatrical achievements of the previous year. With collages, Bițan believes to have found the perfect means of expressing his sensitivity and the perfect environment to suggest a poetic state.
