The artist's entire work appears as the consequence of an in-depth research of international experimental art. The encounter with the experimental works of the artists present at the Venice Biennale in 1964 will be translated into Ion Bițan's preoccupation with the transcendence of matter. One can identify the eclectic nature of his work in the influences inspired by Pop Art, the new realism, fauvism, cubism or surrealism. Ion Bițan was one of the initiators of object art on the national level. He created modular objects, series or sculptures made of innovative materials. After 1989, the artist added written text to his visual work, by integrating parchment pieces, as we can also notice in the present work. The graphic signs lose their primordial sense and become the protagonists of a veritable visual art. Its concreteness is elliptical, subject to a metaphysical decipherment. The artist selects, cuts out and comments punctually, through combinations and juxtapositions, symbol-elements. He breaks away from the convention of raw materiality and also embodies profound meanings in his two-dimensional works. Ion Bițan's art becomes, to a certain extent, a mechanism of imitation, in which the usual objects are given new valences, imperiously necessary in the author's vision. He thus creates veritable mimetic constructions that are the polar opposite of the original. In the series dedicated to manuscripts, maps or books, the artist is constantly searching for new ways of expression. He transposes universal enigmas with extraordinary precision into a dynamic and diaphanous space.
