The icon was part of an iconostasis of a church in Transylvania, being probably the patron icon of the church. On a red background at the top and blue at the bottom of the icon, one can see Saint Nicholas, represented up to the waist, dressed with a red cloth and umber-white omophorion with crosses painted with brown. The character is blessing with his right hand and with the left hand he is keeping the closed gospel pressed against his chest. He is not wearing a mitre and he has a golden halo around his head. On both sides, above clouds, rendered in small dimensions, up to the waist, on the left side, Jesus Christ blessing, who offers him the Gospel, and on the right side, the Mother of God who offers him the omophorion (allusion, of course, to the conflict between St. Nicholas and Arie at the Council of Nicaea in 325). Both have gold halos. The features of the face of St. Nicholas are made with great accuracy of painting, which proves the hand of a painter trained in the tradition of post-Brâncoveanu painting from Wallachia. The relatively graphic model of the expressive face of St. Nicholas, the science of rendering the blessing hand, hair and beard modelling, reminds of the author’s training in the style of painting promoted south of the Carpathians. The frame applied to the icon is double profiled and painted inward with blue and outward with red.
