This stone plaque depicts the coat of arms of Andrea Cordero Lanza di Montezemolo, a cardinal and Catholic archbishop who lived between 1925 and 2017. He was a great expert in heraldry and, from a young age, he designed the coat of arms of numerous high church officials, including that of Pope Benedict XVI. The church hat, known as the galero, is depicted above the shield. It has five rows of tassels ("houppes" or "fiocchi"), indicating the cardinal rank. On the colourful depictions of the coat of arms, the church hat is red, also an indication of the latter’s rank as cardinal. The cross with the two bars in the background, known as the patriarchal cross or "Cross of Lorraine", is also an indication of rank. The eight peaks of the cross of Malta protrude from behind the shield, a mark which was granted to him due to his service in the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. Usually the Roman Catholic clergy cannot display knight marks on their coat of arms, except for prizes received in the Order of the Holy Sepulchre or in the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. On the colourful representation of his coat of arms, the flag of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, a white cross on a red background, is also painted above the arch, however, here it is omitted, due to the inability to accurately represent the flag without colours. In Catholic heraldry, the bow and arrow symbolize determination, and the two stars represent honour and achievement. The scroll depicted under the shield reads "Justitia et Pax" (Justice and Peace), the slogan of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace of which he was secretary.
