The work was edited by the Jesuit monk Famianus Strada (1572-1649), a professor at the Collegium Romanum in Rome. The edition appeared as propaganda material in favour of Spanish and Catholic politics during the Protestant Dutch War of independence against the Spanish crown. The first page of volume two contains the famous stylized Belgium cartographic image, Leo Belgicus, in the form of an engraving on hand-coloured copper. The two volumes are illustrated with 24 engravings on copper, depicting portraits of the powerful parties involved in the conflict.
