Pope Pius XI decorated George Mavrocordat in 1929 with the papal order "Sf. Grigore cel Mare" ("St. Gregory the Great"), civilians class, the patent bearing no. 1480 from the register of the Chancellor of orders of the Vatican. The papacy of Pius XI (1929-1939) is considered controversial, due to the Pope's hesitations to condemn far-right regimes, i.e. the Nazi regime in Germany and the fascist regime in Italy. George Mavrocordat, descendant of an illustrious Romanian aristocratic family, lawyer and diplomat, continued the family tradition, participating in the political and diplomatic life.
