"Muzele sunt o necesitate pentru poeţi. Orice dragoste care duce la creaţie îşi dobândeşte legitimitatea" ("Muses are a necessity for poets. Any love that leads to creation acquires its legitimacy"); Blaga wrote about muses and love. In Domniţa Gherghinescu Vania, the poet found, at a time in his life as an artist, what he needed to keep the act of creation burning. Lucian Blaga met his muse Domniţa in 1937, on the occasion of a reception at the Academy. She approached the poet as an admirer and came to inspire him with verses. Lucian Blaga would later call her "the friend of poetry". At a time when the poet was uninspired, Domniţa instilled a literary revival in him. After several meetings in Braşov and Bucharest during which the beautiful wife of Gherghinescu Vania stole Blaga’s heart, the two began a correspondence that lasted several years. Blaga becomes the one to whom Domniţa confesses about her admirers and her life. In turn, the poet devotes verses to her, in which the woman of his dreams is the centre of attention. "Domniţă din ţară bârsană, / Lumină sunt, inimă, rană" ("Lady of the land of Bârsana, / I am light, heart, wound"), wrote Blaga in 1941 in the poem "Încântare" ("Delight"). As Blaga recalls the events of that period, in his autobiographical novel, "Luntrea lui Caron" ("Charon’s boat"), the split between the lady and the poet occurred in 1944. The poet is disappointed by the frivolity of the one he had deified in verses. A certain moment when Domniţa drew him into an arranged meeting would be recounted by the poet as follows: "În clipa aceea, de limpeziri fără voie, s-au stins în ochii mei caratele de vrajă ale aceleia pe care o numisem prietena poeziei, şi apariţia ei deveni aceea a unei hetaire, care-şi doza calităţile spirituale cu virtuţi frivole, după celebre modele ale antichităţii". ("At that instant, with unwitting clarification, the charms of that which I had called the friend of poetry faded into my eyes, and her appearance became that of a hetaera, who dosed spiritual qualities with frivolous virtues, according to the famous models of antiquity.") Despite the revelation, Blaga continues to write loving verses to his muse. However, the correspondence between the two lasted until 1948.
