The map represents the northern part of the Balkan Peninsula and is made by Mercator and published in 1589. After the death of Gerardus Mercator, most of the engraving plates used to make maps of atlases were purchased by the Hondius family, among them being the one used for the purpose of creating this map. Thus, the map was to be edited and intensively multiplied both in the Hondius editorial house and by the Bleau family, in a slightly different representation. The map contains an inset map with stylized geometric elements, on the upper left in the form of two heads of lions facing each other that hold a string in their teeth that seems to hold a massive iron lock closed. The string goes through the closing holes and ends with tassels. The cartographic content is framed by a grid with meridians and parallels, and on the lower right side, a graphic scale in Italian miles is rendered.
