Seated on a scrolled throne, in his priestly vestments adorned with golden flowers, Saint Nicholas holds the closed Gospel on his left and blesses with his right. The shape of the throne and the movement of the vestments give a dynamic air to the drawing, also taken up by the details of the physiognomy. The gold background, strewn with flowers, enhanced by the reflection of the glass in the light, gives a special glow to the icon, thus mitigating the somewhat non-canonical nature of the material on which it was painted. Dated on the reverse, with Cyrillic characters "1799". (M.B.)

Research information

Easily identifiable thanks to the large format and the background covered with gold leaf, with a very personal style, characterized by fluidity and dynamism, are assets that ensured the success of the first icons painted in Nicula. There are three icons known, till this moment, in the public collections in Romania, one in the patrimony of the Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese of Alba Iulia and two in the museum collection of the Orthodox Metropolitanate of Cluj.
