Virgin Mary in Sorrows is depicted in the bust, dressed in a black cloth, with her hands folded on her chest, as a sign of prayer and assumption. In the far left of the icon is the Savior Jesus Christ crucified on the Cross. The upper register shows two long rods with flowers and leaves arranged symmetrically. The design is refined, the colours harmonious. (M.B.) Conservation status: relatively good, has a transverse crack from top-right corner to bottom-left and two cracks on the bottom-left side.

Research information

The icon is published in "New Considerations on Transylvanian Glass Icons", by Alexandru Constantin Chituță, Sibiu, 2021, pg. 207. So far three similar icons are known, one in the collection of the "Saint Nicholas" Church in Calbor, Brașov, one in the collection of the Făgăraș County Museum and one in the collection of the "Dimitrie Gusti" National Village Museum in Bucharest.
